Examinetics, Inc. recommends that you mark April 28th in your calendar. Two awareness days for occupational safety and health are taking place on this date.
The first is the international campaign titled World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This event, which began in 2003, is marked on April 28th each year and is championed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a tripartite organization that is ‘devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity’. Events will be hosted worldwide as part of the campaign and it is recommended that interested readers take a look at the ILO’s website to learn more. The ILO has published a booklet titled ‘Health and Life at Work: a Basic Human Right’ that has a particular focus on the importance of health and safety at work during these difficult economic times.
The second awareness day on this date is Canada’s National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace also known as Workers’ Memorial Day. This campaign began in 1983 by the Canadian Labour Congress and was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991. To mark this recognition, the Mourning Day Act (S.C. 1991, c. 15) was passed. Businesses are asked to be particularly vigilant on this day.
